Silt Fence Material Overview

Black/green polypropylene woven fabric. This high quality engineered geotextile is stabilised to resist degradation due to ultraviolet exposure. It is resistant to commonly encountered soil chemicals, mildew and insects, and is non-biodegradable.

Silt fence is a temporary sediment control measure commonly used on construction sites to protect water quality in nearby streams, rivers, lakes and seas from sediment in storm water runoff. The fence barrier stops soil sediments and worksite litter from washing into the curb and into local stormwater drainage points.

This runoff can:

  • Reduce water quality in creeks and rivers
  • Smother in-stream habitats
  • Damage fish health
  • Cause sediment plumes off recreational beaches
  • Affect all aquatic life

Silt fence is manufactured from strong woven fabric designed to retain sediment when soil is being disturbed by construction processes such as land grading and other earthworks, however the fabric allows water to pass through.

This enables clean flow of water into near by water catchments thus allowing the local environment to thrive.

Silt fencing is a popular option for sediment control offering builders and contractors compliance with EPA, fast installation and low cost.

Positioning of your silt fence should be downslope of the main area of activity with minimum height 600mm above ground. Stakes should be installed at 1 or 1.5 meter intervals on the lower side of the barrier. Embed the lower edge of the fence in the soil approximately 200mm, and backfill as necessary.
